Week end visit to the Somme

Saturday 23 – Sunday 24 April £149

Tour assembles at 06.00 on April 23 and disperses at 22.00 on 24 April at Stapleford Granary Join WWI specialist Alain Chissel as he leads this short tour to the Somme, examining the many sites that made up one of the greatest battles of the Great War. We start with an afternoon focusing on the action of 1 July 1916, a visit to the village of Serre and the Lochnagar Crater – the mine explosion that marked the beginning of the battle. Then there is an overnight stop in Arras followed by a visit to Delville Wood and Flers, where the first use of the tank occurred. Our tour includes a wreath-laying ceremony at the Thiepval Memorial, which was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.Cost of £149 includes: return coach travel, accommodation based on sharing a twin room, breakfast, one lunch and all visits. Admission to the lecture on 17 March is also included.
